Getting to know the team – introducing Diana McLeish

Featuring Diana McLeish, Executive Director of Scullion LAW.

When did you join Scullion LAW?

I started in 2009 on a consultancy basis to help with PR, Marketing and Events after gaining some experience post University in PR & Radio. I went to the University of St Andrews to study History of Art and sort of fell into marketing gradually. I now have over 10 years of experience in this area which is constantly evolving so I am kept on my toes and enjoying the journey so far.

My first year at Scullion LAW was exciting as I helped to re-brand the firm from Nicholas J. Scullion & Co (as it had affectionately been known for over 30 years) to Scullion LAW.

This was a massive project but very rewarding. As part of the re-brand I organised the VIP launch of our new office premises from Church Street Hamilton where we had been for decades to 105 Cadzow Street in Hamilton. It was a star studded, red carpet event with over 100 close contacts, friends and professionals from across Scotland in attendance.

Billy McNeill MBE cut the red ribbon – for which we shall be forever grateful.

We also won the Scottish Criminal Law Firm of the Year Award early 2010 which was a huge achievement for the firm.  Criminal Defence use to be at the heart of the firm but over time the business has evolved.

Later that year with the help of the Head of Education from South Lanarkshire Council and my colleague Shanna, we set up the first Annual School’s Debating Cup – which is now in its 10th successful year. We got a motion passed through The Scottish Parliament as an excellent example of a local business engaging with the community. It was a really fruitful chapter and I enjoyed being back in Glasgow for a short while before I met my partner who encouraged me to move down to London 2011-2015. I returned back to Scotland with my family in 2015.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

During my time at the office, I have pulled together several award winning legal submissions including the Scottish Legal Award Excellence in Client Care 2016 and the Community Contribution 2019 of which I am most proud. I would not have been able to do this without the hard work put in by our fabulous team. Winning feels amazing. It really motivates us all and feels great to get national recognition amongst our peers.

We have also been shortlisted for the 2019 Glasgow Business Awards Active and Healthy Workplace. In 2020 we won a national Fundraising Excellence Award from Marie Curie and were shortlisted for Family Team of the Year at the Scottish Legal Awards. 2020 also saw us rank in the Legal 500 UK for the first time (first time we entered) which was a great achievement for our team.

What we lack in size and budget we make up by investing our time and effort.

We are more than a law firm. We care and we go above and beyond to make Scullion LAW a great place to work, whilst providing an excellent service to clients and giving back as much as we can to the community. This is what I enjoy most about my role – the variety that each day brings.

I love fundraising.

I am a community champion and love to encourage colleagues to raise money for causes close to their hearts. We work closely with a few charities and over the years have taken part in events such as 10k runs, half marathons, 23 mile Kiltwalk, Zip Slides across the River Clyde, sponsored walks, charity football tournaments, Sleep out in the Park and small bake sales.

It is very important to give back. We have been working closely with the charity Marie Curie for the last 6 years raising over £230,000 of future income for the hospice and also we are trained Dementia Friends with Alzheimer Scotland. Fundraising has always been in my blood.

I like that we work together to make a positive difference to the lives of others.

What three words would colleagues use to describe you?

Kind – helpful – creative.

Provide a social highlight from working at Scullion LAW over the last 12 months?

A group of us from Scullion LAW took part in the charity Kiltwalk, walking 23 Miles from Glasgow Green to Loch Lomond. It was a fun afternoon. It did not rain, the scenery was exceptional and there was lots of cheer and encouragement from local people along the route. I enjoyed being with my colleagues – we kept each other going. I also enjoyed our team day out cruising around Loch Lomond at the start of the year which was more of a jolly. I look forward to going to the Edinburgh Christmas Markets with colleagues and Wine Tasting with Management at Hotel Du Vin.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family. I have two young boys and a loving husband, plus a large extended family so I enjoy hanging out with them. I try to go once or twice a week to the gym and I enjoy boxing, swimming and running. At home I enjoy cooking, entertaining & gardening. I love being outdoors. I also enjoy chilling out watching Netflix.

Some of my favourite shows this year have been Big Little Lies, Succession and Game of Thrones.

When time permits I enjoy painting, travelling and snowboarding.

I have a good work life balance. I work 3 days a week.

Anything else to add?

Out of work I run a community facebook page called Glasgow West End Mums & Dads (which has over 3000 followers) and I am still very active on the United For Colitis facebook page (which has over 5000 followers) raising #IBD awareness (Inflammatory Bowel Disease).

Please feel free to check them both out.

Get in touch if you have any questions.

Thank you.
