Scullion News & Resources
Anna deals with the full range of criminal cases, with a particular specialism in domestic, sexual, and complex crimes.
She is meticulous in her preparation. Every case is considered and prepared to the highest standard. She is a confident and experienced advocate in court with a high success rate, and her experience helps her to guide her clients through what can be the lowest point in their lives. She fights to achieve the best possible outcome for every client in every case.
In recognition of her success, Anna won the Legal 500 Scotland’s Crime ‘Rising Star’ of the Year for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024. In 2025 she was ranked as a ‘Leading Associate’ by Legal 500, and as an ‘Associate to Watch’ by Chambers UK. These rankings are an independent accreditation of Anna’s standing as a highly accomplished solicitor in her field.
Anna’s wealth of experience derives from a strong background with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, where she trained and practised as a Procurator Fiscal Depute. She was also seconded to the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague, where she assisted the Prosecutor in the case of Haradinaj et al – the first re-trial to be held in an international criminal court.
Since 2012, Anna has worked exclusively in criminal defence, and has conducted over 80 Sheriff and Jury trials across Scotland. She is a confident litigator with extensive experience in drafting and arguing legal submissions.
Client A Feedback:
“We had Anna MacKay taking care of our case, and I cannot recommend her enough. She showed us so much knowledge and made us feel safe as the case progressed since we knew that, with Anna, we would get the best outcome possible! The feeling of having someone capable of defending you was what kept us going, and I’m so very happy we found her.”
Anna joined Scullion LAW in 2020 as an Associate Director, and was promoted to Senior Associate Director in 2024. She has quickly become the “go to” solicitor for cases of a domestic or sexual nature.
In recent years, Anna has focussed on preparing and arguing complex cases of a domestic or sexual nature. In particular, she now conducts a large number of trials concerning allegations under Section 1 of the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act (DASA) 2018, both at summary and solemn level courts across Scotland, alongside allegations under the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.
Here is what one of her recent ‘DASA’ clients who received an acquittal had to say:
“I cannot thank Anna enough for the exceptional representation she provided throughout my case. From the very beginning, she was thorough, meticulous, honest and completely committed to achieving the right outcome. Her attention to detail was extraordinary — she left no point unexplored and no issue unexamined, and it was clear at every stage that she had a deep understanding of both the law and the complexities and sensitivities of my situation. This was an incredibly difficult, stressful and sensitive period in my life, but she handled every interaction with empathy, patience, and genuine care. I had never been in a sort of trouble with the criminal justice system until this point and Anna made me feel heard, supported, and reassured at every step, while still being firm, strategic, and razor-sharp when it mattered most. Her preparation for trial was exceptional, and her advocacy in court was nothing short of brilliant. Thanks to her hard work and dedication, I achieved the best possible outcome. I am deeply grateful for everything she has done for me and would recommend her without hesitation to anyone in need of strong, compassionate, and highly skilled criminal defence representation.”
