A Will and a Power of Attorney are often spoken about separately, but they should always be thought about together....

The Wills, Powers of Attorney and Bereavement Team at Scullion LAW has helped deliver a very special gift to charity. The firm recently administered an estate that resulted in a donation of £1,547,036.07 to the charity Help Musicians. This is the largest single legacy gift the charity has ever received from a Scottish benefactor.
The gift came from the estate of a woman who loved music all her life. She played several instruments and music was a big part of her world. Her husband died before her, and in 2019 she decided to write a Will. In that Will, she asked for the rest of her estate to go to Help Musicians so her love of music could continue helping others after she died.

Help Musicians, which incorporates the Scottish Musicians Benevolent Fund, supports people who work in music across the UK. The charity provides financial support and offers help with health and wellbeing. It also supports musicians with career development and helps them deal with the challenges of working in music. Its work helps musicians at many stages of their lives and careers.
The estate was complex and needed careful management. Scullion LAW’s specialist Wills, Powers of Attorney and Bereavement Team worked closely with the charity to make sure the donor’s wishes were followed properly. The work was led by Executive Director Ailidh Ballantyne. The team made sure everything was handled with care, respect and professionalism.
Ailidh Ballantyne said:
“It was a privilege to administer this estate and to see such a significant legacy passed on in line with our client’s clear wishes. She had a deep love of music and wanted that to live on by helping others. Legacies like this show the real power of a carefully prepared Will and the difference it can make, not just to families but to charities and communities for generations to come.”
The donation made a significant impact for the charity and helped support many musicians, allowing the organisation to continue its vital work as a safety net for those working in this exhilarating, but challenging sector.

Charlie Hill, Director of Fundraising at Help Musicians said:
“Gifts like this make both an immediate contribution to our charitable goals and allow us to plan for the future so that we can continue supporting musicians at every stage of their careers. Without this gift, we would not have been able to support the volume of musicians who turn to us for much needed support. It is a wonderful reflection of the donor’s love of music and her desire to help others continue creating it and we are hugely grateful for it and the support of Scullion LAW.”
Writing a Will helps ensure your wishes are followed after you die. It can also help support the causes that matter most to you. This story shows how thoughtful planning can create a lasting impact.
