Foreign assets can include property held abroad, bank accounts, shares, and investments. The type of foreign asset will determine how the estate is administered. Often, the laws of the country where an asset is held will determine how that asset is dealt with, which can make assets abroad challenging to deal with.

However, with our network of fellow professionals, we can assist with all sizes and complexity of estates to ensure that all assets are dealt with, whether here or abroad.

If a deceased person left a Will, this may make provision for dealing with any foreign assets they had. However, in most cases where property was held abroad, there will likely be a foreign Will (in addition to the Scottish Will). This is because each country’s laws are different when it comes to dealing with estates.

If there was no Will left at all, any property held abroad will be dealt with in accordance with that country’s laws. We work with solicitors across the world who can easily advise on the specific rules of the appropriate country.

Very helpful and informative from the beginning. I was made aware of every step of the process and understood it perfectly. This is also a sensitive subject for me where I was shown consideration and compassion. My first meeting was an extremely positive experience.
